Bud, Bark and Needle: Winter Tree Identification for Beginners
Nov. 22, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
Increase the enjoyment of your upcoming winter snowshoe walks and cross-country ski adventures by learning to identify some of the region's trees using twig, bark, and bud characteristics.
Join Guide Charlotte Demers on a one-mile walk to the Santanoni Farm, where we will cover basic terminology used in tree identification and discuss the natural history of the species we identify. Return to the parking lot at your own pace. Please bring suitable clothing, footwear and water for a 2-mile round trip hike. Meet at the upper parking lot at 1 p.m.
Register below. This is a free event.
Winter Weekends
Dates Tbd
Grab your skis or snowshoes and join us during our Winter Weekend events. During these three special weekends, the Gate Lodge visitor center and Main Camp are open to visitors for tours.
The Artist’s Studio, a stone building near the main camp on the shore of Newcomb Lake, will be open as a warming hut. Bring your own cup (or use one of ours!) and enjoy free coffee, tea, or hot chocolate by the woodstove. Our neighbors at SUNY ESF’s Adirondack Interpretive Center provide snowshoes at the Gate Lodge for any visitors without their own. These events are hosted by the Santanoni Partners: AARCH, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Town of Newcomb.
