We currently have open positions for three seasonal summer staff!


Summer Staff Positions

Three summer staff / advanced internship positions are available each summer at Camp Santanoni. The employment period is from June 10 – August 10, 2024, with flexible end dates as needed.  The Camp Santanoni staff will be expected to work 37.5 hours over a five day workweek. A $500/week stipend and housing will be provided, and internship credit can be earned. Applicants should be in historic preservation, history, environmental studies or a related field, enjoy and be very comfortable in the outdoors, be motivated and independent and work well with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Interaction with public visitors, including site explanation and interpretation through daily tours of the site. This includes the Gate Lodge, accessible from Route 28N; the Farm Complex, a one-mile walk/bike into the complex; the Main Lodge Complex, a five-mile walk/bike each direction.

  • Participating in ongoing restoration work. This includes staining, painting, window reglazing, and other discrete conservation projects.

  • Operating a small visitor’s center at the Gate Lodge, including signage and maintaining inventory.

  • Developing programs and exhibits for ongoing site interpretation.

  • Working with the Camp Santanoni Historic Site Manager and Santanoni Interpretive Coordinator on projects as needed.

position requirements

Applicants must be upper-level undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate level and studying/have studied historic preservation, history, or a related field in college or graduate school.

  • Independently motivated who works well in a small team environment.

  • Physically able to travel daily walking or cycling on an uneven carriage road between the Gate Lodge and Main Camp (5 miles each direction). This job requires travel 5 miles each direction by foot or bicycle on a path through the woods in all weather.

  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.

  • Able to lift relatively large and heavy objects, alone or with assistance, such as wooden window sash.

  • Comfort working outdoors all day in a rustic wilderness environment.

Additional information

The Main Camp at Santanoni is a 4.5-mile hike/bike from Santanoni’s Gate Lodge near the hamlet of Newcomb. Staff should be in good physical condition in order to be able to routinely travel between the Gate Lodge and Main Camp on foot or by bicycle and to handle the physical work required at the site. Applicants should also have some outdoor experience and be comfortable, if not delighted, working in this wilderness setting. Although there will be support from AARCH staff, local townspeople, and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation staff, considerable self-sufficiency is required. 

All staff will reside at the Gate Lodge, a communal living situation with private bedrooms, a shared hall bathroom, a full kitchen and common living spaces. The Gate Lodge is located directly off NYS Route 28N and the center of Newcomb. Summer staff will be supervised by the AARCH Executive Director and their team, with support from the Town of Newcomb and regular interaction with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
